my summer wardrobe staples
It feels like I’ve been sweating for three days straight… I guess it’s officially summer here in Toronto! The summer heat has been especially present here in my apartment, which lacks built in air conditioning. I believe this was a topic of conversation last year around the time I started this newsletter, where my conundrum was choosing between living with an ugly window unit or living in a sauna. Believe me that I tried to prioritize the aesthetic of my space for as long as humanly possible (foolishly perhaps). I ended up biting the bullet mid heat wave last August, and finally got some rest in September. Anyways, I’m telling you this as a form of procrastination, because once again I’m frustrated by the big ugly box that will soon live next to my bed for the foreseeable future.
If you’re wondering how tf this is relevant to getting dressed, it means that I’ve been tired and hot and dressing quite minimally as a result. Today’s post isn’t the flashiest, but we’ve got some good summer staples and warm weather formulas to get dressed with ease. I’m off to Paris next week, so you can expect some more fun summer outfits (maybe lol) to come then. I get excited for summer simply by knowing I get to wear this shirt. It doesn’t look nearly as special here as it does in real life, but you’ll have to trust me. It’s a vintage shirt I thrifted a couple of years back, which quickly became one of my most prized vintage pieces. It’s sheer and so light-weight that it feels fragile. So delicate in fact that I’m scared to over wear it and for it to fall apart. My pants feel similar as they continue to fray and rip a bit more with each wear, but that only makes me appreciate them more. On another note, I rediscovered my sunglass chain which I’d recommend not only for practicality, but to add some interest to your summer looks.
Clogs!! Incase you weren’t here whenever I last talked about mine, they’re unmarked from VSP Consignment (one of my best finds.) Because of this, I’ve never been able to share them with you… until now! I was very excited when a follower messaged me asking for styling advice for their Troentorp clogs. Their shape sorta feels like what I imagine a Sketcher’s shape-up would be like lol? Not that I’ve ever tried those on, but they’re surprisingly very comfortable. Worn here with my vintage Levi’s Silvertab cargo shorts (a much better price than what I payed for mine at a vintage store in London) and my hoodie is vintage Russell Athletics (again for a much better price than what I payed in Paris.)
I don’t own many v-necks that are warm weather appropriate. I’ve been on the hunt for an oversized cotton v-neck long-sleeve tee, but until I find the right one, and even when I do, unbuttoning your shirts just past your chest gives an alternative option. I was very impressed by this one from Uniqlo (no longer available :/) and has become an easy grab and go shirt this spring. If you like the shape of these Acne jeans, they’re currently available in a lighter wash here. Of course we have navy Havaianas to go with them.
Jorts get a lot of hate, and honestly I’ve never really understood why. I mean, of course they can be done wrong (aka too tight or ripped I guess) but a standard pair of denim shorts are timeless to me. Mine are Diesel (these are their most similar pair at the moment.) I threw on this sweater that I was gifted for a dinner this past winter with Tess Gigone x Reformation and possibly my favourite shoes of the summer by Marsèll.
Besides my clogs, these cashmere sock shoes are one of most my anticipated to wear pieces for summer. They’re equally fun and chic and go with pretty much everything. If you’re still needing a plaid to tie around your waist this summer, I like the colours in this Levi’s shirt, which I’m wearing with my old Studio Nicholson (similar style) shorts from VSP.
I couldn’t even tell you how many t-shirts I own, but I can tell you that I’ve been reaching for the same two almost every day. Are you going to hate me because they’re vintage? Yes. Can you find many options with these keywords on eBay? Also, yes. My pants are from a friend’s brand that no longer produces for men, but I did find a pair of red Havaianas which have become increasingly hard to find since last summer!
I know I’ve mentioned Jeanerica in my post “outfits I want to wear this spring” but this is their first appearance in one of my outfit roundups. I purchased their ringer tee earlier this year (which is currently on sale) and I find myself reaching for it almost as often as my fav vintage tees. For reference, I’m 6’1 and wearing an extra-large. My jeans are vintage Diesel but there’s some really good alternatives here.
This linen COS blazer is on sale! I recommended the suit as an easy wedding guest look earlier this year, but incase you’re actually starting to panic now, here are the pants as well. As you can see, I’m also making the case to style the blazer with a Canadian tuxedo, but you can’t go wrong either way imo.
There’s not much to report in terms of linking (I’m sorry.) I’m not even sure if this look is a success to me… would I wear this exact combo again? I’m not too sure. Anyways, I saw this cool looking girl wear all white on the street and this was my attempt at copying her. I think I would choose a more structured tee instead of my loose vintage tee that I usually wear with jeans. However, my old Jil Sander shorts can do no wrong.
Okay! There’s only a few left, but these are probably my most worn shorts of all time. Not an inexpensive choice for flimsy cotton shorts, but I’m guessing my cost-per-wear is a few cents by now (if you don’t believe me, I’m wearing them as we speak.) It’s rare that an item can be worn for sleeping and lounging yet also deemed appropriate to leave the house, especially if you throw on a good pair of loafers with them.
As mentioned, I’m heading to Paris next week! Truly one of my favourite cities, that I luckily get to visit with one of my best friends this time around.
