002: the sexiest thing you can wear this summer are jeans and flip-flops.
the hottest summer combo (in my opinion) + my recommendations!
One trick that has severely impacted my style, in the most positive way (I think at least), is the wrong shoe theory — creds to Miss Allison Bornstein of course! Earlier this year, I attended a Theory event, hosted by Allison at Holt Renfrew. I had not previously heard of the concept, which I believe was popularized on TikTok. Essentially it works exactly as it sounds — choose the most unexpected footwear option available, to complete your look and add some interest. Perhaps the most obvious example, which we will most definitely be diving into today, is the jean and flip-flop combination. Forget the beach, I actually dislike flip-flops for this purpose, I’d rather go barefoot. I’m ready to rock my Havaianas in the city this summer (don’t judge).
Instead of trying to convince you for the remainder of this post, I’m just going to show you some recent examples I’ve worn and let you decide:

If you’re on board, please continue reading. If you’re still not convinced, but are however a fan of denim and/or flip-flops, please also continue reading. Now is the fun part! I’ve searched the internet to bring you my best picks of each, woohoo!
My Denim Picks:
Finding the perfect pair of denim is one of those first-world struggles that I’m quite sure we can all relate to. I’ve assembled my favourite blue jeans from Uniqlo to The Row, so hopefully there’s an option for you to try. When deciding which pairs made the list, here are some factors I took into consideration: cut, quality, wash, price, overall timelessness. Okay, enough blabbering let’s get started.
Uniqlo Wide Straight Jeans: Coming in at under $60 CAD, most likely even less if you’re based somewhere else, you can’t go wrong with these. Classic cut at an ideal price.
Banana Republic Loose Jean: I know I’m not the only one with BR on their radar lately. All things considered, these are definitely near the top of my list. I strongly considered adding these to my collection in white. Grab them before you miss out in your size, like yours truly!
Sunflower Loose Jeans: When it comes to denim, and honestly most things, I’m a fan of Sunflower. The quality and silhouettes are great at a relatively reasonable price point.
Sunflower Wide Twist Jeans: I own this style in a darker wash, and have received many compliments each time I wear them. This pair has a slightly twisted seam for a fun, but still very chill twist, on your regular old pair of jeans.
Orslow Paint-Splattered Selvedge Jeans: For me, a paint-splatter done right is a classic. I have a pair of my grandpa’s old Wrangler denim paint shorts that I saved just in time, before he “tossed them”. They have been a staple in my wardrobe ever since, weather permitting of course. Luckily, these Orslow jeans can be worn all year round.
Studio Nicholson Riso Denim Pant: To me, these are perfect. Classic nineties-inspired denim. Love!
Vowels Blue Baggy Jeans: These have been sitting in my wishlist for some time now. Although they’re not a need in my closet right now, I’m hoping they’re right for one of you. They’re so good, and on sale!
Isabel Marant Jorje Pants: Another brand doing some great things recently, in my opinion. These are effortlessly cool, and I think I’d reach for them a ton.
RRL Straight-Leg Jeans: Double RL (Ralph Lauren, if you’re not familiar) makes really good denim. Classic with a western flare that only gets better with age.
Markaware Denim Work Pants: There’s something about these that caught my eye. The colour, texture, and cut make these a great pair if you’re looking for some uniqueness that still works for everyday.
Husbands Flared Jeans: I love Husbands! If you’re unfamiliar with the brand, I am very pleased to be your introduction. I visited their shop in Paris last summer, and can attest to their quality and overall vibe. These are the perfect 70s/Parisian inspired denim with a modern take.
Auralee Selvedge Wide Jeans: I’ve been wanting to add a pair of Auralee denim to my wardrobe, and these are for sure a contender. Another brand that does no wrong in my eyes.
Acne Studios 2021M Jeans: I had to include another pair of paint-splattered denim for you, this time in a lighter-wash from Acne Studios.
The Row Fred Straight-Leg Jeans: If you’re going to invest this much on a pair of jeans, they better stand the test of time. Arguably, no one does it better then The Row when it comes to impeccable quality and timeless silhouettes. A perfect straight-leg never goes out of style, so I think they’re worth it.
Saint Laurent Distressed Straight Jeans: These are (or are VERY similar) to my Saint Laurent jeans that I’m wearing above. I sized up for a low-rise and wider fit, which I commonly do when purchasing jeans/pants. A forever pair in my closet.
Celine Kurt Jeans: Very similar to our Saint Laurent friend above, but slightly more distressed. Celine and Saint Laurent denim might be tied for my number one!
Etro Straight-Leg Jeans: I was a bit shocked that this pair by Etro came out to be the priciest on my list. I chose to share because they hit all the boxes for me. Perfect colour, quality (they look so soft and drapey in Mr Porter’s video), length and fit. If you have an unlimited budget, please enjoy and let me know.
My Flip-Flops Picks:
How much is too much to spend on a pair of flip-flops? This is the question we’ll be investigating today. I’ll present some options, and you can let me know where we’re drawing the line, okay?

The Row Dune Flip-Flops: Starting off with the most controversial pair on the list (actually maybe not), are the Dune Flip-Flops by The Row. For almost $1000 CAD they can be yours! Red, beige or black, you can take your pick, but the red ones are what made me question my sanity.
Archies Arch Support Flip-Flops: At 25, arch support already sounds appealing. I honestly refuse to buy a shoe that’s uncomfortable anymore, at this age I’m just not meant to live an uncomfortable life. Anyways, this pair come in 20 styles/colours to choose from. Whether you’re looking for a classic colour or to have some fun, they’ve got you.
Havaianas: The iconic flip-flop. Simple and to the point. Everyone should have a pair if you ask me. I also just ordered a red pair, to scratch my itch for The Row Dunes, obviously.
Ancient Greek Sandals Hero Flip-Flops: Another very classic style that I would love to add to my collection. If you’re looking for an elevated leather flip-flop, these are a great option.
Eros Leather Flip-Flops: A leather flip-flop for a better price. I especially like the brown colour with contrast stitching. This feels like the obvious choice for cool dads everywhere, and those aspiring to achieve that look.
Zara Leather Sandal: It will be rare to see me mention Zara on here, but occasionally it just makes sense. If I do include anything, it will have to be timeless and made of quality materials. That said, these are honestly at the top of this entire list for me right now. I love the design and brown suede straps.
Dries Van Noten Calf-Hair Flip-Flops: I rushed to get this post up, just so I could share these before they completely sell out! At the time of posting I believe there’s one pair left, so run!! I imagine showing up to brunch with these, my fav zip-up hoodie, and big sunglasses. Yes.
Cos Leather Flip-Flops: Black leather flip-flops. The perfect summer dinner shoe.
Old Navy Fip-Flops: I have heard too many positive reviews to not include these. If you’re unsure if flip-flops are right for you, why not give these a try?
Auralee Leather Flip-Flops: If you’ve decided you have an unlimited budget for your perfect pair of flip-flops, then I would grab these ones for sure.
Margiela Split Sole Flip-Flops: If you can’t get behind a Tabi in other forms, I’d argue this version makes a lot of sense. A silly twist that will stand the test of time.
Well that concludes our denim and flip-flop hunt. See you next summer (kidding— definitely subscribe and come back next week)! I would love to know if you try any of my suggestions, or if you think I missed something. My DMs are always open :)
Ciao
